Islamorada Kingfish Charters

King Mackerel, The Reef Assassin | Year-Round

What Is a Kingfish Charter in Islamorada?

An Islamorada kingfish charter is an offshore or reef-edge trip focused on live bait, slow trolling, and kite fishing for king mackerel. These trips are great for anglers who want fast bites, strong table fare, and a real chance at mixed-bag action with nearby pelagics.

King Mackerel Fishing in Islamorada

King mackerel, or kingfish, are the ambush predators of the reef. They sit in current seams and strike with explosive speed, shredding bait and tackle alike. Those teeth will cut through anything short of wire leader.

Islamorada is one of the best kingfishing destinations in Florida. Kingfish stack on the 80-120 foot reef edge, current seams, and wrecks year-round, with the hottest bites in spring and fall. Slow-trolling live bait like goggle-eyes and mullet is deadly. Our kite fishing setup puts multiple baits in the strike zone at once.

🎯 Kingfish are often caught alongside sailfish and mahi, and they are great table fare smoked.

Smoker King with First Mate Joey

First Mate Joey with a smoker kingfish, the kind of fish that bends the rod and runs drag before you even get your bearings. King mackerel on the reef edge are absolute assassins.

Slow-trolling live bait under the kite is the deadliest setup we run for kings. Wire leader, goggle-eye bait, and hold on.

Reef Edge King

Big kings stack on the 80 to 120ft reef edge, especially on current seams. This is what happens when you put the right bait in the right place.

Another Smoker

Kings are year-round in Islamorada, but spring and fall is when the big ones show up. Smoked kingfish dip on the dock after a day like this is hard to beat.

The Kingfish Arsenal

Targeting kings requires the right presentation. We slow-troll live goggle-eyes and mullet on wire leader. It is essential because those razor teeth will slice through mono and fluoro like butter.

  • πŸͺ Kite Fishing: Multiple live baits suspended in the strike zone simultaneously.
  • 🎣 Slow Trolling: Live goggle-eyes and mullet along current seams.
  • ⚑ Wire Leader: Non-negotiable, because those teeth are no joke.

"When the kings are stacked on the reef, every pass is a chance at a smoker fish."

Multi-Species Mayhem

One of the best things about kingfishing in Islamorada is the company they keep. While working the reef edge for kings, you're in prime territory for sailfish, mahi, and cero mackerel.

Captain Kit Carson reads the reef like a book. Current direction, water temp, bait movement, all the signals that tell you where the kings are stacked. The 42-foot Liberty Express positions perfectly for both kite and trolling presentations.

Kingfish & Cobia FAQs

Real answers to questions I actually get on the dock.

When is kingfish season?

Year-round, peaks spring (March-May) and fall (October-November). Spring is when "smoker kings": the 40+ pound trophy class: show up. Summer fish are smaller schoolies. Winter fish concentrate on bait when cold water cycles through.

When is cobia season?

March through May during the spring migration up the Keys, peak sight-fishing in April. Cobia follow migrating rays, sharks, and big turtles on the surface, so we sight-fish them off the reef edge and around channel markers. Fall produces stragglers; spring is the real shot.

How do you catch kingfish?

Live-bait slow-trolling. Pilchards, threadfins, or blue runners on stinger rigs (single-strand wire with treble-hook stinger) at 2-3 knots along the reef edge in 60 to 200 ft. Kite fishing produces too: same kite setup as sailfish, just rigged with wire leader for the king bite.

How do you catch cobia?

Sight fishing. We run the reef edge at 8-12 knots scanning the surface for fish, rays, or large turtles. When we spot a cobia, the boat circles and the angler pitches a live pilchard, a bucktail jig, or a soft plastic eel directly to the fish. Cobia bite aggressively on sight when presented right.

How big do they get?

Schoolie kings 10-25 lbs. Smoker class 40-60 lbs spring time. Florida king record over 90 lbs. Cobia average 20-40 lbs with trophies 50-80 lbs (FL record 130+). Both species pull hard for their size and hit explosive surface strikes.

How much does it cost?

$2,200 plus $200 fuel for up to 6 anglers: about $400 per person split six. The 8-hour day includes captain, mate, live bait, all tackle, wire leaders, stinger rigs, licenses, ice, water, and fish cleaning.

What are the limits?

Florida king mackerel: 3 per angler per day, 24-inch fork length minimum. Cobia: 1 per angler per day, 36-inch fork length minimum (tightened from 33"). Both are federal HMS species with separate vessel and aggregate limits.

Are they good to eat?

Cobia is excellent: firm, mild, often compared to grouper. Grills, blackens, and fries well. Kingfish are oily; best smoked (Keys staple is smoked king dip), grilled fresh same-day, or pickled. Cobia is the takeaway fish; king is the BBQ fish.
