Wahoo caught on a high-speed trolling charter in Islamorada

Islamorada Wahoo Charters

The Fastest Fish in the Ocean | Year-Round Action

What Is a Wahoo Charter in Islamorada?

An Islamorada wahoo charter is a full-day offshore trip built around high-speed trolling along the reef edge, wrecks, and current seams. These trips are best for anglers who want violent strikes, cooler-worthy meat, and a strong shot at one of the fastest fish in the ocean.

High-Speed Wahoo Hunting in Islamorada

Wahoo - known as "ono" in Hawaii, meaning delicious - are the fastest fish in the ocean. Clocking speeds north of 60 mph, a wahoo strike is pure violence. One second you're trolling, the next your reel is screaming and 300 yards of line have vanished.

October through March is prime time. As wahoo migrate through the Florida Keys, they stack along the reef edge, offshore wrecks, and current seams in the 100-200 foot depth range. High-speed trolling with lipped plugs and rigged ballyhoo at 12-14 knots is the program - and the DirtyBoat runs fast enough to cover serious ground.

πŸ† The world record wahoo was 184 lbs - and they are the best eating fish in the ocean.

DirtyBoat Catch Log - Record Fish

69.9 lbs - Kevin & Karrie

The biggest wahoo we've put in the box - 69.9 lbs on the scale. Kevin and Karrie from Palm Beach Gardens were high-speed trolling the reef edge when this beast lit up the spread. Pure chaos from hookset to gaff.

"That fish hit the lure like a freight train - Kevin didn't even know what was happening until the reel started screaming." - Captain Kit Carson

The Wahoo Game Plan

Wahoo are often caught while targeting other species - mahi, tuna, sailfish - but when we go hunting for them specifically, we run a dedicated high-speed trolling spread. Lipped plugs, rigged ballyhoo, and wire leaders at 12-14 knots across the reef edge.

  • 🎣 High-Speed Trolling: Covering ground fast to intercept migrating fish.
  • 🌊 Reef Edge & Wrecks: Structure holds the bait that attracts wahoo.
  • ⚑ Wire Leaders: Those teeth will cut through anything else.

"Great for multi-species days - wahoo, mahi, and tuna all in the same spread."

The DirtyBoat Advantage

Wahoo hunting demands a fast boat. The 42-foot Liberty Express with twin turbo Cummins diesels gets up to speed quickly and holds a trolling spread at 14 knots without breaking a sweat.

Captain Kit Carson knows the reef edge intimately - every wreck, every ledge, every current seam where wahoo ambush bait. When the fall migration fires up, we're on it before word hits the dock.

Islamorada Wahoo FAQs

Real answers to questions I actually get on the dock.

When is wahoo season?

Peak runs October through March, with the strongest bites tracking the full moon and new moon (3-4 days around each). Cooler water and migrating fish push wahoo along the reef edge and offshore wrecks. Bigger fish in winter; numbers best in late fall.

Where do you catch them?

Reef edge in 200-600 ft and offshore wrecks like the Spiegel Grove and Eagle. The Humps produce wahoo during winter migrations. We troll the edges where green meets blue water and the depth contour changes: wahoo ambush bait at those breaks.

How do you catch them?

High-speed trolling at 12 to 15 knots: faster than mahi or sailfish trolling. Yo-Zuri Bonita lipped plugs, cedar plugs, and weighted skirted ballyhoo on #7 or #8 single-strand wire. Wahoo teeth slice fluorocarbon instantly; wire is non-negotiable.

How fast can they swim?

Fastest fish in the ocean: documented sprints over 65 mph. First run after the hookup can dump 200 yards of line in 20 seconds. Wahoo gear runs heavier drag than mahi tackle for that reason, and that's why high-speed trolling works: the lure has to look like it's running for its life.

How big do they get?

Average 15-50 lbs in the Keys. Quality fish 60-80. Trophy 100+ pounders are caught every season, usually winter. Florida state record exceeds 130 lbs. A 40-pound wahoo running 60 mph on a stretched line is one of the most explosive bites in offshore fishing.

How much does it cost?

$2,200 plus $200 fuel for up to 6 anglers: about $400 per person split six. The 8-hour day includes captain, mate, all high-speed trolling tackle, lures, wire leader, ballyhoo, licenses, ice, water, and fish cleaning.

What's the bag limit?

Florida wahoo limit is 2 per angler per day, 24-inch fork length minimum. Federal HMS rules apply in federal waters. Cleaned and vacuum-bagged at the dock at Robbie's Marina for the trip home.

Are they good to eat?

Widely considered the best-eating pelagic in the Atlantic. Firm, mild, white flesh with no fishy taste. Sashimi grade out of the water. Grills, smokes, fries, freezes well. Many guests have it prepared right at Robbie's restaurant the night of the catch.
