Florida Keys fishing charters targeting Sailfish, Mahi, and Swordfish
Book Your VoyageKey Largo vs. Islamorada fishing
If your goal is reef fishing, Key Largo can work. If your goal is serious offshore fishing, our Islamorada fishing charters usually win because they put you closer to the Gulf Stream, the Humps, and the blue water that holds Sailfish, Mahi, Wahoo, Tuna, and Swordfish.
Why Islamorada wins offshore
Less run time, faster access to productive water, and more time with lines in the water instead of watching fuel burn.
Is the drive worth it?
Yes. For most visitors staying in Key Largo, the drive to Robbie's Marina is short and the payoff is more real fishing time once you leave the dock.
Key Largo fishing charters and deep sea fishing
If you are scouting the best Key Largo fishing charters, start here. Key Largo is a great base, but seasoned anglers know the real gateway to the Gulf Stream and the "Humps" sits 15 minutes south in Islamorada. That is where DirtyBoat fishes.
Launching from Robbie's Marina shaves miles off the run to blue water. More lines in the water, less daylight burned getting there. Whether you are after Mahi-Mahi, tournament-grade Sailfish, or Giant Swordfish, that head start is hard for a Key Largo boat to match.
The DirtyBoat advantage
Many Key Largo fishing guides run small center consoles that leave you exposed to the elements. The DirtyBoat is a 42-foot Liberty Express. You get a fully air-conditioned salon, a private restroom, and a stable, heavy-weather hull that keeps your crew comfortable while you fight big fish.

Key Largo Fishing FAQs
Real answers to questions I actually get on the dock.
Islamorada or Key Largo for offshore?
Islamorada. The Gulf Stream runs within 4 to 7 miles of the Islamorada reef edge but pushes farther offshore from Key Largo. The Humps (Marathon and West Hump) are also closer at 15 miles south of Islamorada. For reef fishing inside the bay, Key Largo is comparable.
How far is Robbie's from Key Largo?
22 miles south of Key Largo at MM 77.5. 25 to 30 minutes straight down US-1 with no traffic. From northern Key Largo near John Pennekamp, allow 35 minutes. Free parking at the marina.
What can we catch?
Sailfish, mahi-mahi, wahoo, blackfin tuna, kingfish, swordfish, yellowtail and mutton snapper, grouper, and amberjack depending on season. The species mix is identical to Islamorada because we fish the same Gulf Stream water from either base. The difference is run time, not what's available.
How much does it cost?
Split charters from $475 per person. Private charters: $1,200 half-day, $1,800 3/4 day, $2,200 full day, $2,700 swordfish, plus fuel surcharge ($200, $500 for swordfish). Includes captain, mate, bait, tackle, licenses, ice, water, and fish cleaning.
Sailfish or swordfish near Key Largo?
Yes. Same Gulf Stream water accessible from either base. Sailfish season runs November through March, kite fishing the reef edge in 100-300 ft. Swordfish year-round but best December through April, deep-drop 26 miles offshore to Floyd's Wall. Captain Kit Carson is Keys Weekly Best Fishing Guide 2023.
Reef vs offshore: what's the difference?
Key Largo reef fishing in John Pennekamp State Park targets snapper, grouper, and mackerel in 30-100 ft. Islamorada offshore runs 4-15 miles out for sailfish, mahi, tuna, wahoo, and swordfish in blue water. Different fish, different techniques, different boats. DirtyBoat does offshore.
Drive to Islamorada or book Key Largo?
For offshore, drive to Islamorada. 25 minutes south buys you 30 to 45 minutes of extra fishing time on the water versus running from Key Largo. That math pays off every trip. For pure reef and bay fishing, a Key Largo-based charter is fine.
Are there marinas in Key Largo?
Yes. Postcard Inn, Holiday Inn, and Pilot House all base charters in Key Largo and serve reef and near-shore fishing well. DirtyBoat operates out of Robbie's Marina in Islamorada because the offshore grounds we target (Gulf Stream, the Humps, Floyd's Wall) are closer to our slip than they would be to any Key Largo marina.
