Captain Kit Carson's Complete Guide

How to Plan a Fishing Trip in Islamorada

Everything you need to know — from picking the right charter and timing your trip, to what to pack, what it costs, and what you'll catch. Written by a captain who's been running these waters for over a decade.

The Short Answer

To plan a fishing trip in Islamorada, Florida: choose your target species by season (sailfish Nov–Apr, mahi May–Oct), pick between a half-day (4hr), ¾-day (6hr), or full-day (8hr) charter, book a licensed captain through FareHarbor or direct, and show up with sunscreen and an appetite for action. Islamorada is called the "Sport Fishing Capital of the World" for a reason — the Gulf Stream runs tight to the reef, bait is thick, and the pelagics follow. DirtyBoat Charters runs out of Robbie's Marina on the 42' Liberty Express. Trips start at $450/person for split charters, $1,200 for private half-days, $1,800 for ¾ day, and $2,200 for a full day. Repeat clients get 10% off.

1. Why Islamorada for Fishing?

Islamorada isn't called the "Sport Fishing Capital of the World" because someone made it up. The geography here is genuinely exceptional: the Gulf Stream runs closer to Islamorada than almost anywhere else in the Keys — sometimes within 4–7 miles of the reef line off Alligator Reef and Molasses Reef.

That matters because the Gulf Stream is the highway. It carries warm, clear blue water loaded with baitfish and the predators that follow them — sailfish, mahi-mahi, wahoo, blackfin tuna, kingfish. When the stream rides tight to the reef (which it does frequently off Islamorada), you don't have to run 40 miles offshore to find world-class fishing. You're on it in 20 minutes.

Add to that the extensive reef system — Molasses, Conch, Davis, Alligator, Crocker, and Tennessee reefs — and you've got nearshore fishing for snapper, grouper, and amberjack on top of the offshore bite. Islamorada fishes multiple directions, multiple depths, all year round.

We launch from Robbie's Marina in Islamorada — one of the most iconic fishing docks in the Keys. The fish literally swim by the dock.

2. Best Time of Year to Fish Islamorada

The honest answer: Islamorada fishes well year-round. But here's how the seasons break down by target species:

Winter / Spring (Nov – Apr)

  • 🎣 Sailfish — peak season, kite fishing on the reef line
  • 🎣 Kingfish — stacked on the reef
  • 🎣 Wahoo — offshore current edges
  • 🎣 Blackfin Tuna — humps and current edges
  • 🎣 Cobia — following rays inshore
  • 🎣 Mutton & Yellowtail Snapper — year-round on the reef

Summer / Fall (May – Oct)

  • 🎣 Mahi-Mahi — peak season, weedlines offshore
  • 🎣 Blackfin Tuna — year-round, peaks summer
  • 🎣 Wahoo — offshore, fast trolling
  • 🎣 Swordfish — deep drop 1,200–1,800ft, daytime
  • 🎣 Tarpon — inshore April–June
  • 🎣 Snapper & Grouper — reef fishing year-round

Captain's Take

"If I had to pick one month, I'd say March or April. The sailfish bite is firing, the weather is mild, the stream is close, and the crowds haven't hit yet. But I've had epic days in every single month of the year out here. The Keys don't really have an off-season — just different fish."

3. What Fish Can You Catch in Islamorada?

Here's what's realistically catchable — not the optimistic brochure version, the actual honest breakdown:

Sailfish

The signature Islamorada catch. Kite fishing with live ballyhoo on the reef line Nov–Apr. Catch and release — these are pure sport fish. Multiple bills in a day is not uncommon when the bite is on.

🐬

Mahi-Mahi (Dolphin)

The fun fish. Schools up on weedlines and floating debris offshore May–Oct. Fast, acrobatic, and delicious. Great for groups and first-timers.

🔥

Wahoo

The speed demon. Fast trolling offshore current edges. Explosive strikes and scorching runs. Excellent table fare. Nov–Apr and year-round on the right conditions.

🎯

Blackfin Tuna

Year-round on the humps and current edges. 10–30 lbs typical. Sushi-grade fish. Often caught mixed in with sailfish.

🦈

Kingfish (King Mackerel)

Reef line Nov–Apr. Aggressive strikers on live bait and trolled lures. Great fight on light tackle.

⚔️

Swordfish

Daytime deep-dropping 1,200–1,800 feet offshore. Specialized charter, heavy tackle, high skill ceiling. Trophy fish.

🪸

Mutton & Yellowtail Snapper

Year-round on the reef. Great for kids and beginners. Multiple fish days are common. Excellent eating.

💪

Amberjack

Deep reef structure and wrecks. 40–80 lbs. Pure brute. If you want a workout, this is your fish.

4. Choosing the Right Charter

There are two main decisions: duration and private vs. split.

Duration

Half Day

4 Hours

Best for: Families, beginners, reef fishing

7 AM – 11 AM or 1 PM – 5 PM. Enough time to get offshore and catch fish. Best for kids.

¾ Day

6 Hours

Best for: Best value, most versatile

7 AM – 1 PM. Enough time to run offshore, find the fish, and work the bite properly. Our sweet spot.

Full Day

8 Hours

Best for: Serious anglers, swordfish, wahoo

7 AM – 3 PM. Max range, max effort, max results. Best for experienced groups chasing trophy fish.

Private vs. Split Charter

Private Charter

  • ✅ Just your group, the captain, and the mate
  • ✅ You set the agenda — species, style, pace
  • ✅ Great for families, corporate groups, celebrations
  • ✅ Captain focuses 100% on your group
  • ⚡ Higher total cost, lower per-person if you have 4–6 people

Split Charter

  • ✅ Share the boat with 1–3 other anglers
  • ✅ Best per-person price — from $450/seat
  • ✅ Great for solo travelers or couples
  • ✅ Meet other anglers, social experience
  • ⚡ Max 4 anglers total, trip happens with 4 booked

5. What to Expect on the Water

First time on a charter? Here's what your day actually looks like aboard the 42' Liberty Express:

6:45 AM

Arrive at Robbie's Marina, Islamorada. Meet Captain Kit and the mate. Gear briefing, safety rundown.

7:00 AM

Lines off. We run offshore — typically 15–25 minutes to the reef edge depending on where the action is.

7:20 AM

Lines in. Kites up if we're sailfishing, rods out if we're trolling. Captain reads the water and adjusts.

All Day

Fish. Captain handles the tactics — you handle the rod. Mate rigs bait, handles gaffs, keeps you in the action.

End of Trip

Run back to dock. Mate cleans and bags your catch. Captain walks you through what you caught.

The boat is fully equipped — outriggers, fighting chairs, live bait wells, fish finder, radar, and an air-conditioned cabin when you need a break. Fishing licenses are included for everyone on the boat. You don't need to bring a single piece of fishing gear.

6. What to Bring

✅ Bring This

  • ☀️ Reef-safe sunscreen (reapply every 2 hours)
  • 🧢 Hat and polarized sunglasses

  • 🧴 Seasickness medication if prone (take the night before)

❌ Leave This Behind

  • 🍾 Glass bottles (not allowed on the boat)
  • 👠 Heels or dress shoes

  • 🎣 Your own fishing gear (unless specifically requested)
  • 🤢 An empty stomach — eat something light before departure

8. Islamorada vs. Key West vs. Key Largo for Fishing

If you're choosing where to base your fishing trip in the Florida Keys, here's the honest comparison:

Islamorada — The Sweet Spot

The Gulf Stream is closer here than anywhere in the Keys. You spend less time running and more time fishing. The reef system is exceptional. The town is built around fishing culture — every marina, every tackle shop, every conversation is about fish. No sprawling tourist traps eating your time.

Key West — Great but Different

Bigger party scene, more charter boats, but the stream is further out. You're paying for more run time to get to the same fish. Better for wreck fishing and tarpon. More nightlife if that's your thing.

Key Largo — Closer to Miami, More Reef

Easiest drive from Miami. John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park is incredible for diving and reef fishing. But the stream is a longer run than Islamorada and the offshore fishing isn't as concentrated.

Bottom line: if offshore sportfishing for sailfish, mahi, wahoo, and tuna is your goal, Islamorada is the answer.

No. All DirtyBoat charters include Florida saltwater fishing licenses for every angler on board. You don't need to purchase one separately.

How many people can go on one charter?

Private charters can accommodate up to 6 anglers comfortably on the 42' Liberty Express. Split charters are capped at 4 anglers total.

Is Islamorada fishing good for beginners?

Absolutely. The captain and mate handle all the setup, rigging, and technique coaching. You just hold the rod. Many of our best days are with first-timers who've never held a fishing rod.

What if the weather is bad?

Captain Kit monitors conditions closely and has sole authority to cancel for safety. If we cancel due to weather, you get a full refund or can reschedule at no charge. We fish in light rain — we don't fish in lightning or unsafe seas.

Can I keep the fish I catch?

Yes, within Florida regulations. The mate will clean and bag your catch at the dock. Sailfish are catch-and-release. Most other species you can keep within legal limits.

What is the best month to fish in Islamorada?

March and April are outstanding — sailfish season is peaking, wahoo are active, the weather is mild, and the Gulf Stream rides close. But honestly, Islamorada fishes well every month of the year. There's no bad time to book.

How far in advance should I book?

For spring break (March/April) and holiday weekends, book 2–4 weeks out. Weekdays and off-peak periods often have same-week availability. Call or text Captain Kit and we'll find you a date.

Ready to Fish?

The Gulf Stream doesn't wait. Neither should you.
