Captain's Log — March 18, 2026

Conditions

Post-frontal north wind blowing 20-25 out of the NNE this morning, backing to 15-20 by afternoon. Seas 3-5 with the occasional 6-footer to keep you honest. Small Craft Advisory up. High pressure building behind the front — this thing is winding down. By Friday the wind drops to 10-15 and the weekend looks flat. New moon tonight.

Water Report

The stream is parked on our doorstep. We’re talking right there — tight to the reef from Key Largo down through Islamorada. Water temps on the reef line sitting 74-76°F with 78-81°F stream water just a stone’s throw off the edge. The temp break is sharp and clean. When conditions are like this, you don’t need to burn fuel — the fish come to you.

Bait is absolutely stacked along the reef. The green water loaded with ballyhoo butts right up against that clean blue edge. That transition zone is where the groceries are, and every predator in the ocean knows it.

Reef Breakdown

Molasses Reef — Cleanest water, tightest stream proximity. When it calms down, this is the spot. Blue water practically lapping the reef. Kite fishing here will be lights out.

Conch Reef — Strong current influence, bait getting pinned. Solid color change. Expect action.

Alligator Reef — Bait concentration is insane right now. Current ripping through — sails will be stacked on this edge. My top pick for Thursday/Friday.

Tennessee Reef — Good convergence zone between here and Alligator. Worth a drift.

Davis Reef — Muddier nearshore but bait is thick. Kings should be chewing.

Crocker Reef — Wider gap to the blue water. Save this one for when the stream pushes even tighter.

The Play

When this wind backs off — Thursday afternoon into Friday — get on the reef line between Molasses and Alligator in 100-300 feet of water. Kites up, live ballyhoo in the spread. Sails are the main event. Kings will be a bonus all day long. For the wahoo hunters, a quick 8-10 mile run puts you in 78°F stream water — high-speed trolling the edge.

New moon phase means blackfin tuna should be biting at first and last light on the reef edge and humps.

The setup right now is as good as it gets. Stream tight, bait loaded, new moon, sharp temp break on the reef. Just need Mother Nature to ease up on the throttle.

Midday Update — 11:30 AM

Wind is backing off right on schedule. We’re down to a steady 15-18 NNE — still sporty but the whitecaps are calming down. Ran outside the reef line this morning to check water and the stream hasn’t budged — still parked right on the edge from Molasses down to Tennessee. That sharp temp break is holding, maybe even tighter at Alligator Reef where bait is absolutely piling up on the edge. Green water flushing hard through the passes with this new moon tide, pushing ballyhoo right onto the reef tract. Molasses is sitting in gin-clear blue water — the cleanest I’ve seen it in weeks. Conch and Alligator showing the best convergence zones. Everything is loading up for tomorrow. When this wind drops below 15 Thursday morning, it’s game on.
