Captain's Log — March 24, 2026

Tuesday morning and Mother Nature’s still writing us blank checks. That high pressure system hasn’t flinched — parked over the Gulf like it owns the place. Northeast breeze 5-10, dying to variable 5 this afternoon. Hawk Channel’s a foot. Straits running 1-2 with a lazy northeast bump. No advisories. No drama. Just go fishing.

What the Water’s Showing

The Gulf Stream hasn’t budged. She’s holding tight — 11 miles off Molasses, 15 off Alligator. Current along the reef line is running NE at 0.24–0.36 knots, which is that steady push that pens bait against the reef. Out at the offshore edge the stream is hauling at nearly 2 knots NNE — she’s cooking. Water’s clean, salinity sitting at 36.3–36.4 PSU across the board, right in that sweet Gulf Stream range.

SST Chart — Florida Keys, March 24, 2026 Sea surface temperatures across the Florida Keys reef line — NOAA satellite data, March 24, 2026

Reef-by-Reef

Molasses Reef — 77.2°F — Reef current running ENE at 0.24 kts. Lightest flow of the line right now, which means bait is stacking rather than blowing through. Kites up, live ballyhoo out, and wait — sails have been cruising this stretch all week.

Conch Reef — 77.7°F — Slightly warmer than Molasses with a NE push at 0.31 kts. That current seam between Molasses and Conch is a bait trap. Kings are hammering the 80–120 ft zone. Wire rig, slow troll.

Davis Reef — 77.7°F — Same current and temp as Conch. The corridor compresses bait schools — blackfin tuna are working the seams here. Good alternative if Molasses gets crowded.

Crocker Reef — 77.7°F — Matching Conch/Davis at 0.31 kts NE. Wahoo are running through when the current threads right. High-speed trolling with a ballyhoo on wire at first light.

Alligator Reef — 77.7°F — Home water. Strongest current of the reef line at 0.36 kts NE — that’s the stream’s reach pushing up through here. Kites south toward the color change, should be productive all day.

Tennessee Reef — 77.5°F — Flow easing to 0.24 kts NE down here, but the deep edge play is still on. Work plugs along the 200-ft contour at first light for wahoo.

The NE current flowing along all six reefs is good news — bait gets pushed into structure, predators line up on the down-current edge. Classic sailfish setup. The offshore edge running at 1.9 kts confirms the Gulf Stream is muscular right now.

The Play

Kite fishing day, no debate. Molasses-to-Alligator corridor is lit up with NE current and clean water. Fly live ballyhoo under kites on the current seam — sails, kings, and wahoo are all on the menu. For the big wahoo, run Tennessee’s deep side at first light.

Wind fills in from the east later this week — 10-15 by Thursday, 15-20 by Saturday night. This flat window is closing. Don’t waste it sitting at the dock.

Midday Update — 11:30 AM

Wind backed off even more since dawn — NNE barely touching 9 knots now, dying to variable 5 this afternoon. Hawk Channel is going to lay down flat. Reef temps shifted slightly: Molasses warmed up half a degree to 77.7°F while Alligator and Tennessee cooled a tick to 77.3°F and 77.1°F respectively. That’s the sun heating the shallow shelf up north while the deeper reef line holds steady. Gulf Stream hasn’t moved an inch — still parked 11 miles off Molasses. No advisories, no surprises, no excuses. This is about as good as late March gets in the Keys. That east wind is still coming Thursday, building to 15-20 by Saturday night. Clock’s ticking on this flat window.

Evening Update — 5:00 PM

Afternoon delivered exactly what we expected — variable winds under 5, glass-calm Hawk Channel. Reef temps held steady all day: Molasses 77.7°F, Alligator 77.3°F, Tennessee 77.1°F. No movement from the Gulf Stream, still sitting 11 miles off Molasses. Tonight shifts to NE 10 with 1-foot seas in the Channel. Tomorrow looks fishable again — NE to east 10, easing to 5-10 by afternoon, seas 1 foot in the Channel and 1-3 in the Straits. No advisories on the board. The real change comes late week — east winds build to 10-15 Thursday, then a front pushes through Saturday night into Sunday bringing 20-25 and seas to 5+ feet. Wednesday is your last guaranteed flat day. Use it.
