Limit of Mahi — Luca & the Boys Go Deep

Limit of Mahi — Luca & the Boys Go Deep

Carolina Boys in the Keys

Luca made the drive down from North Carolina with his two boys — Luca Jr., fresh out of high school graduation, and his little brother Eli, ten years old. The mission? Go catch a swordfish.

You love hearing that. A dad loads up his kids and drives south with one thing on his mind — put his boys on something they’ll never forget. That’s the kind of trip that sticks with you forever.

So we loaded up the Dirty Boat and headed offshore.

The Swordfish Hunt

We set up for swords and went to work. Four, maybe five drifts out in the deep, baits down, waiting for that rod to load up. The ocean was cooperating, the spread looked good — but the swords weren’t home. Sometimes that’s just how it goes. You can do everything right and the fish still get a vote.

But that’s the thing about offshore fishing. The ocean always has a plan B.

The Call That Changed Everything

While we were working the deep, another boat radioed us over to a big school of mahi they’d found. You don’t ignore that call. We pulled lines and ran to the spot.

The school was there and they were hungry. Between us and the other boat, we put ten fish in the box before the school scattered. Just like that — from swordfishing to mahi madness. Luca Jr. and Eli were lighting up. Ten-year-old Eli was cranking on fish like he’d been doing this his whole life.

The Mother Lode

We started trolling around looking for more, and that’s when we found the one you dream about. A school of over a hundred mahi stacked up in over 1,300 feet of water. Big fish mixed in with the schoolies — the biggest one pushing over 25 pounds. A bull that made Eli’s eyes go wide.

From there it was absolute chaos. Rods bending, fish flying, Luca and the boys rotating through the cockpit. When you find a school like that in the deep water, you don’t leave. You work it until the box is full.

And that’s exactly what we did. Caught our limit, slammed the fish box shut, and pointed it toward the house.

A Day Worth the Drive

Came out here for swordfish and went home with a limit of mahi. That’s offshore fishing. You make a plan, the ocean makes a better one, and you have the sense to say yes.

Luca Jr. — congrats on the graduation, brother. Eli — you’re a natural. And Luca, you did it right bringing those boys down here. This is the kind of day they’ll be talking about for years.
