Deep Sea Fishing Key Largo: Run South to Islamorada and Fish the Real Edge

I get this call almost every week in summer. Family rents a house in Key Largo, somebody googles deep sea fishing Key Largo, and they end up on the phone with me because they want to know what is actually out there. So here is the straight answer from a captain who runs offshore six days a week out of Robbie’s Marina.

Key Largo is the top of the Keys. It is where most visitors land first because it is the closest island to Miami. The reef off Key Largo (Molasses, French, Carysfort) is real and it fishes. The Gulf Stream still pushes in close. The dolphin still ride the weedlines north of Alligator Light in June.

But the truer offshore grounds, the Humps, the deeper edge, the kite fishing zone in winter, all of that sits further south. Islamorada is twenty-five to thirty minutes down US-1 from Key Largo. Same drive as crossing a midsize city in traffic. And once you are at Robbie’s at Mile Marker 77.5, you have a different boat-to-fish ratio in front of you.

What “deep sea” actually means in the Keys

People say deep sea fishing and mean very different things. In a lot of Florida ports, “deep sea” is a head boat dropping squid on a wreck in 80 feet of water. That is fine fishing. It is not what we do.

That means the reef edge in 100 to 200 feet for kingfish, mutton snapper, and sails in winter. It means the blue water in 600 to 1,800 feet for mahi and wahoo. It means the Islamorada Hump (22 miles SSE of the dock) and the Marathon Hump (37 miles south) for blackfin tuna, amberjack, and the occasional yellowfin.

In June, which is where we sit right now, the mahi bite has been the main event. Water temp on the edge has been 82 to 83 degrees. Sargassum is loose and stringy, not the matted carpet we get some years, but it has been holding fish. We have been working between Alligator Light and the Islamorada Hump, dragging ballyhoo on the riggers and pitching live pilchards to anything that shows in the spread.

Why I tell Key Largo guests to drive south

This is not me hustling. If you have a great boat picked out of Key Largo, take it. There are good captains up there. But if you are calling around and still shopping, here is what changes when you trailer your cooler down to Mile Marker 77.5.

You start the day closer to the Hump. That is real. From Key Largo, the run to the Islamorada Hump is well over 30 miles. From Robbie’s it is 22. On an 8 hour charter, that extra hour each way is the difference between two solid drifts on the Hump and four or five.

The reef I fish every day is right here. Alligator Light, Davis Reef, Hens & Chickens, Crocker, Pickles. I know which way the current is running on each of them before I leave the slip because I was there yesterday. A Key Largo boat running south to fish the same water is making a delivery run, not a fishing run.

The dock itself helps. Robbie’s has parking, the Hungry Tarpon for breakfast at 6 a.m. before we shove off, the famous tarpon at the dock for the kids after we get back, and fuel right there. It is an easy launch point for a family that does not want a hassle.

What we are catching right now (mid June)

Mahi has been steady. Most days we are putting between six and fifteen in the box, mix of schoolies and gaffers, with the occasional bull over 30 pounds. The bigger fish have been holding under floaters in 800 to 1,200 feet. Frozen ballyhoo on a sea witch is doing most of the work. Live pilchards close the deal on the picky bulls.

Blackfin tuna on the Humps has been on and off. When the current is right, we are getting solid 8 to 15 pound class fish on jigs and live baits. When the current dies, the bite dies with it. That is the Hump. Always has been.

Wahoo are showing up scattered. We pulled a 42 pounder off the edge two weeks back high-speed trolling on the run home. Not a numbers fish in June, but a quality bycatch.

Reef fishing is reliable for families who do not want a long run. Yellowtail snapper on the chum slick has been textbook this month. Mutton on the deeper reef edges at first light. A few mangroves on the patches. If you have kids on board and want bent rods, we work the reef in the morning and run offshore in the afternoon. That mix is the most popular trip I run all summer.

What to book and how to think about it
