By early May it is on hard, and the fishing stays consistent through August. September is a shoulder month with fewer numbers but the occasional trophy.

May and June are the peak months in Islamorada. Water temperature is right in the 78 to 82 degree sweet spot, the weedlines set up cleanly along the Gulf Stream edge, and the schools are aggressive. If you want a limit-fill trip, target those two months. July is still excellent, August starts to fade, and April is a legit early-season option for the trophy bulls.

Bull mahi (males over 30 lbs) are more common in April, early May, and September. They travel alone or as part of a very small pod, usually holding under a big piece of floating debris like a pallet or a hunk of sargassum. If a bull is home, one boat working the object usually gets one shot at him, and it needs to be a fast pitch with live bait.

The bite window is roughly 74 to 84 degrees, with the sweet spot at 78 to 82. Below 74 the schools push south, above 84 they slow down and hold deeper. We check SST (sea surface temperature) charts every morning before running. If we see a clean edge with a 2 degree break, that is the first place we look.

Morning through mid-day is prime. We usually leave the dock at 7 AM, are on the fishing grounds by 8:30, and the strongest bite runs from 9 AM to about 1 PM. Fish get scattered by mid-afternoon as the sun goes overhead. That is why our mahi trips are Full Day 8-hour runs: we fish the peak window and still have time to work a second area.

Mahi hate a flat calm and love a light chop. A 10 to 15 knot east or southeast wind sets up the perfect weedline. Post-front conditions with clean, warm water are excellent. Big north winds or a stalled front can shut it down for a couple days as the water gets stirred up and cold-pushed inshore.

Islamorada, Marathon, and Key Largo all sit right on the Gulf Stream edge and produce mahi consistently. Islamorada has the advantage of two dominant offshore structures: the Humps (undersea mountains 15 miles offshore) and the color break where the reef drops off. We fish both depending on conditions and time of year.

Can you fish for mahi in winter?

Occasionally, but not the target. Winter water in the Keys is cold, and mahi migrate south to warmer water off Cuba and Central America. Winter offshore trips target sailfish, kingfish, and blackfin tuna instead. Mahi come back through in April.
