Large mahi mahi caught during peak Florida Keys season aboard DirtyBoat

When to catch mahi in the Florida Keys

Peak: May and June. Trophies: April & September.

The short version

Book May or June for peak numbers. Book April or September if you want a shot at a bull over 30 pounds. Skip December through March, that is sailfish season in the Keys. Water temperature is the whole game: mahi love 78 to 82 degrees, and the Gulf Stream edge is where the weedlines set up.

Month-by-month breakdown

April: Early season, shot at a bull

First warm push through the reef edge. Numbers are lower than May, but the fish that do show up tend to be quality. This is when we see the biggest bulls of the year, usually alone under a big piece of debris. Water temperature is climbing into the mid-70s. Book if you want a trophy shot and are willing to hunt.

May: Peak season begins

The month everything comes together. Water in the 78 to 82 range, weedlines setting up along the Gulf Stream, and schools moving through. Numbers trips fill limits fast. You will typically catch a mix of schoolies (5 to 15 lbs) and gaffers (15 to 30 lbs). Books out fastest for weekends.

June: Still peak, most consistent

Very similar to May but more predictable. Water temps stabilize, the wind patterns are steady, and the weedlines set up cleanly most days. If you want reliability more than the shot at a trophy, June is the pick.

July: Excellent, water is hot

Still very good, though the fish get scattered as water temperatures climb past 82. The bite shifts to early morning and evening. We leave the dock right at first light. Weekends can be crowded on the offshore grounds.

August: Fading, still worth going

Numbers drop off but any given trip can still fire. Best when we get a cold front pushing warm water back down and stirring the current edge. Trip planning gets more dependent on weather windows.

September: Trophy shot again, low numbers

Late-season bulls hold under big cover. If you go this month, treat it like April: hunt one big fish rather than expecting a numbers day. Some of the biggest DirtyBoat mahi have come out of September.

October through March: Sailfish season

Mahi push south. We shift to sailfish, kingfish, blackfin tuna, and wahoo. If you are set on mahi, wait until April.
