The DirtyBoat running south from Key Largo to Islamorada

July 16, 2026

Captain's log, July 16, 2026, light breeze, clean reef window

Thursday, July 16. This is the kind of July forecast that makes the reef look inviting early, as long as you respect the heat and keep an eye on the small thunder chance.

NOAA Key West has Hawk Channel from Ocean Reef through the west end of Seven Mile Bridge at northeast to east 5 to 10 knots today. Seas are 1 to 2 feet, with nearshore waters smooth to a light chop. The Straits off Islamorada are even cleaner on paper, east wind 5 to 10 knots, seas 1 to 2 feet, with an east 2 foot wave at 4 seconds.

Florida Bay is soft this morning. NOAA has northeast to east wind near 5 knots becoming southeast this afternoon, with bay waters smooth. Vaca Key, Florida Bay reported 88.3 F water at 5:54 AM EDT. That is hot water. It does not mean the bay is dead, but it does mean the better work is early, late, shaded, or tied to moving water.

For the reef line, I would call today good, not automatic. Molasses, Conch, Davis, Crocker, Alligator, and Tennessee are all fishable. The boat ride is not the problem. The real question is whether the current lines up and whether you get enough life in the chum slick before the sun gets high.

wind and sea state

Hawk Channel

Hawk Channel is friendly today. Northeast to east 5 to 10 knots with 1 to 2 foot seas is a clean reef forecast for Islamorada. Nearshore waters are smooth to a light chop, so the ride to Davis, Crocker, and Alligator should be comfortable for most crews.

Light wind can make people lazy with the setup. Do not do that. Yellowtail and mutton fishing still comes down to angle, chum, bait, and patience. If the stern is not sitting right or the slick is sliding sideways, move the boat.

The slight shower and thunderstorm chance is there, but NOAA’s synopsis says Saharan dust is still limiting rain and thunder chances across the Keys marine zones for the next several days. That helps the fishing day, even if it makes the sky look a little hazy.

Straits of Florida

The Islamorada Straits look fair to good for a short outside check. NOAA has east wind 5 to 10 knots, seas 1 to 2 feet, and an east 2 foot wave at 4 seconds.

The Gulf Stream edge is close by local standards. NOAA lists it 7 NM southeast of Alligator Reef Light and 3 NM southeast of Molasses Reef Light as of July 12. That puts blue water within striking distance, especially off Molasses.

Still, close water is not the same as fishy water. If you see birds, flyers, weed, bait, or a hard color edge, take the look. If the outside is empty, the reef is the smarter use of the morning.

Florida Bay

Florida Bay is smooth today, but the water is hot. Vaca Key reported 88.3 F at 5:54 AM EDT, and that is the number that matters for the flats side.

Bonefish, permit, and tarpon are still possible, but I would not build the whole day around a hot midday flat. Early moving water is the better bet. Later in the day, shade lines, channels, bridge lanes, and deeper edges have a better chance than skinny water baking in the sun.

EventTimeHeightNotes

Low9:03 PM EDT0.12 ftevening low

The reef window is the rise from the 5:20 AM low toward the 11:07 AM high, then the start of the fall after lunch. If the current pulls clean on the flood, yellowtail should respond. If the bite gets lazy near the top, do not overthink it. Change depth, reset the slick, or wait for the water to start falling.

The late afternoon drop toward the 5:42 PM low can be good for snapper, especially with light wind. Just remember the sun and heat are part of the conditions too. Keep bait fresh and do not let the crew cook while you wait on a bite that already left.

reef notes

Molasses reef

Molasses has the most tempting outside option today because NOAA puts the Gulf Stream edge 3 NM southeast of the light. That is close enough to look if the ocean shows you something.

The reef itself should be good for yellowtail in 45 to 75 feet. With light east wind, you may need to work for current. If the chum hangs straight behind the boat and the fish rise, stay. If it turns into a dead slick with no push, shift until the water does something useful.

Mutton snapper are fair on the deeper edge. A good bait left alone is worth more than ten nervous drops.

Conch reef

Conch is a good clean-water call in this forecast. The ride is fine, the depth range is right, and there should be enough morning tide to make the chum work.

I would start in 50 to 80 feet and let the current tell the truth. Yellowtail are the main target. Muttons are fair deeper, especially around broken bottom where you can keep a bait away from the small fish.

If boat traffic stacks up, slide. There is no prize for fishing in a crowd when the whole reef line is open.

Davis reef

Davis is the practical half-day reef. Short run, fishable water, and enough bottom to make a morning out of it without burning time.

Yellowtail should be good in 40 to 60 feet if the current moves. Mangrove snapper are fair around structure. Cero mackerel are fair when bait gets nervous in the slick.

This is also a good choice for crews that want fish in the box without making the day complicated. Light wind does not mean every reef is better farther away.

Crocker reef

Crocker gets a good grade today if the current has direction. The 55 to 80 foot line is where I would start, especially after the morning water gets moving.

Yellowtail are good. Muttons are fair with a real bait on the edge. Fresh ballyhoo, pinfish, or a small live grunt beats soaking tired bait and hoping.

If the boat swings funny in the light wind, fix the angle. Crocker rewards a clean setup. It will make you look foolish if you anchor close enough and call it good.

Alligator reef

Alligator might be the best all-around Islamorada call today. It has plenty of workable bottom, the Gulf Stream edge is listed 7 NM southeast of the light, and the forecast gives you room to adjust.

Yellowtail should be good in 45 to 75 feet. Mutton snapper are fair on the deeper side. Cero mackerel are fair around bait and moving water.

The tower will get attention because it always does. Fish the reef, not the landmark. There is a lot of good water around Alligator if you are willing to move.

Tennessee reef

Tennessee is fishable today, especially if you are already working west. With Hawk Channel at 1 to 2 feet, the run is not the issue.

Yellowtail and mangroves are fair to good in 40 to 70 feet. The deeper edge has a fair mutton shot. From Islamorada, I would still need a reason to pass Davis, Crocker, and Alligator first.

If the boat has a full day and the crew wants to roam, Tennessee can fit. For a tight charter window, the closer reefs make more sense.

Yellowtail get the best mark today. The forecast is calm enough to anchor cleanly, and the morning rise gives the reef a usable tide window. Use small hooks, steady chum, and do not feed them into a coma.

Muttons are a fair shot. The light sea state helps you fish a bait right, but the bite still needs current. I would keep one honest bait on the deeper side while the yellowtail program runs.

Mahi are fair because the Stream is close, especially off Molasses. Fair does not mean guaranteed. It means look only when the water gives you birds, weed, bait, or color.

The bay side is a heat management game. At 88.3 F, the fish are not looking for a lecture. Get there early, fish moving water, and leave them alone when the flat starts feeling like soup.

captain’s call

Fish the reef first. Alligator is the best all-around call, Crocker is the clean deeper-edge play, and Davis is the efficient half-day move. Molasses gets the outside bonus because the Stream edge is close, but the reef should still earn the first hour.

The best window is the morning rise into the 11:07 AM Whale Harbor high, then the first part of the fall. Keep the setup clean and let the current decide how stubborn you get.

Today is not a weather battle. It is a July discipline day. Light wind, hot water, a small thunder chance, and enough tide to catch dinner if you do the simple things right.

midday addendum, 10:28 am noaa update

NOAA’s 10:28 AM EDT update did not change the main call much. That is good news if you were already pointed at the reef.

Hawk Channel is still northeast to east 5 to 10 knots this afternoon, with seas 1 to 2 feet and nearshore waters smooth to a light chop. The Straits are still east 5 to 10 knots, seas 1 to 2 feet, with an east 2 foot wave at 4 seconds. No real sea bump showed up in the midday package.

Florida Bay is the only place with a small directional slide worth noting. The bay forecast is still near 5 knots and smooth, but the wind is expected to turn east to southeast this afternoon, then southeast to south near 5 knots tonight. That keeps the bay soft, just hotter than I like for a serious midday flats push.

The bigger pattern is still dry and dusty. NOAA says high pressure over the eastern Gulf is keeping gentle northeast to east breezes in place, sometimes east to southeast, with breezes tending to peak in the evening and overnight. Saharan dust remains over the Keys marine zones and should keep rain and thunder chances limited for the next several days.

For the rest of today, the reef call holds. Fish the falling water toward the 5:42 PM Whale Harbor low if the current behaves, and do not get lazy just because the ocean looks friendly. Light wind can hide a sloppy setup fast.

evening addendum, 4:31 pm noaa update

The afternoon finished about like the forecast said it would. Light wind, soft water, plenty of heat, and not much reason to run from the reef unless the outside gave you something real to chase.

NOAA’s 4:31 PM EDT coastal waters update keeps the Keys in a split ridge pattern, with a weak col near the area and light, often variable wind. Breezes are still expected to peak in the evening and overnight before laying down again during the day. The Saharan dust is still part of the story too, limiting rain and thunder chances across the marine zones for the next several days.

For tonight, Hawk Channel is east wind near 5 knots, seas around 1 foot, nearshore waters smooth, with a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms. The Straits are east 5 to 10 knots, seas 1 to 2 feet, with an east 2 foot wave at 4 seconds. Florida Bay is east wind near 5 knots becoming east to southeast, with bay waters smooth.

That is a clean evening marine forecast. The late tide still matters more than the wind. Whale Harbor had the 5:42 PM low at -0.31 ft, then the water starts climbing toward the 11:39 PM high at 1.64 ft. If the reef current straightened out on that rise, yellowtail and mangroves had a fair shot after the sun backed off. If the water stayed lazy, it was a pretty boat ride with bait in the water.

Tomorrow looks fishable again. NOAA has Hawk Channel east wind near 5 knots, seas around 1 foot, and smooth nearshore waters for Friday. The Straits stay east 5 to 10 knots with seas 1 to 2 feet and an east 2 foot wave at 4 seconds. Florida Bay goes south near 5 knots with smooth bay waters. A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms remains, but the dust pattern should keep the rain chances from getting too loud.

My call for Friday is simple. Reef first, especially Alligator, Crocker, Davis, and the clean side of Conch if the current has any backbone. Yellowtail stay the best bet. Keep one better bait soaking for a mutton while the chum works. The outside gets a short look only if the ocean shows birds, weed, bait, or a clean edge. Hot bay water still makes the flats an early or late deal, not a midday grind.
