Captain's Log, July 30, 2026, light southwest wind, calm reef water

Thursday, July 30. NOAA Key West issued the coastal waters forecast at 4:25 AM EDT, and this is about as soft as July gets on the Islamorada reef line.

The western edge of the Atlantic ridge is sliding across the Keys. That gives us a weak southwest to west flow today, then lighter and more variable breeze as Friday and Saturday set up. Good for comfort. It can be tricky for fishing if the current gets lazy, because light wind does not automatically mean a clean chum line.

NOAA has Hawk Channel from Ocean Reef through the reef line at southwest to west wind 5 to 10 knots, seas around 1 foot, and nearshore waters smooth to a light chop. There is a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms. The Straits are even softer, south to southwest wind near 5 knots, seas around 1 foot, with a west to northwest 1 foot wave at 5 seconds.

That is fishable water. It is also July water, so the heat matters. Vaca Key, Florida Bay reported 89.2 F water at 5:54 AM EDT. If you are planning the bay or flats side, do not waste the cool part of the day drinking coffee at the dock.

hawk channel

Hawk Channel is the main lane today. Southwest to west at 5 to 10 knots with seas around 1 foot is easy running water for Molasses, Conch, Davis, Crocker, Alligator, and Tennessee. The nearshore forecast is smooth to a light chop, which means most crews should be comfortable unless a storm cell parks on the wrong piece of ocean.

Light wind can make a captain look smart, but it can also make a spot look dead when the current never gets organized. If the slick falls under the boat or spreads sideways, do not sit there feeding the bottom. Reset, change depth, or move to harder current.

At Long Key, the 5:40 AM EDT NDBC observation showed southwest wind near 8 knots with gusts near 10 knots. Sombrero Key was south southwest near 6 knots with gusts near 8 knots at the same time. That lines up with the NOAA forecast. No drama in the wind, just enough to know which way the boat wants to sit.

The Straits are calm enough for a look. NOAA has seas around 1 foot with a west to northwest 1 foot wave at 5 seconds. That is not a rough offshore forecast.

The question is whether the ocean is worth the fuel. NOAA lists the shoreward edge of the Gulf Stream as of July 26 at 3 NM southeast of Alligator Reef Light and 1 NM southeast of Molasses Reef Light. That is close enough to make a short check reasonable if you see birds, weed, bait, flyers, color change, or anything that looks alive.

Do not blind troll all morning just because the sea is pretty. Pretty water can still be empty. If the reef is biting, make the reef pay first.

florida bay

Florida Bay is forecast southwest wind near 10 knots with a light chop. Tonight it eases to southwest to west 5 to 10 knots, then near 5 knots, with the bay going smooth.

That surface forecast is friendly. The water temperature is not. Vaca Key at 89.2 F before 6 AM is hot enough to shorten the flats window. Bonefish, permit, and tarpon can still eat, but the better shot is early moving water, channels, bridge lanes, shaded edges, or late day when the sun backs off.

For the reef, the cleanest working window is the fall after the 10:07 AM Whale Harbor high. That should give the yellowtail program something to work with if the current pulls down the reef instead of wandering around.

The afternoon low at 4:36 PM may slow some stops. If the bite gets soft late, do not blame the fish first. Check the current.

molasses reef

Molasses gets a good grade today. It has calm enough water for a comfortable run, and the Gulf Stream edge was listed 1 NM southeast of the light in the latest NOAA read. That close edge gives the outside water some upside.

Yellowtail snapper should be fair to good in 45 to 75 feet if the current stretches the chum. Mutton snapper are fair on the deeper side. Cero mackerel are fair around bait and active slicks.

If the outside edge shows birds or weed, take a short look. If it looks dead, come back to the reef and fish what is in front of you.

conch reef

Conch is a good practical call for a reef crew today. The conditions are soft, the tide gives you a morning high followed by a long fall, and the boat should sit without much fuss unless the current gets silly.

Yellowtail are the first bet. Mangrove snapper are fair around structure. A mutton bait on the deeper edge is worth soaking while the water moves.

This is a day to be patient, but not stubborn. There is a difference.

davis reef

Davis is the easy half-day play from Islamorada. Short run, manageable water, and enough bottom in the 40 to 60 foot range to build a snapper trip without turning the morning into a fuel bill.

Yellowtail should be good if the chum line behaves. Mangroves are fair near harder bottom, especially if clouds keep the light down for a bit. Cero mackerel are possible if bait stacks up in the slick.

For families or newer anglers, Davis makes plenty of sense today.

crocker reef

Crocker gets one of the better grades. The light southwest to west wind should leave it comfortable, and the falling tide after the morning high is a good setup for yellowtail.

Start around 50 to 80 feet and let the current tell you the rest. Mutton snapper are fair deeper, especially with a fresh bait placed clean and left alone.

If the boat is sitting right and the slick is stretching, give it time. If the slick is wandering around like it forgot the plan, move.

alligator reef

Alligator is a strong all-around call today. NOAA has the Gulf Stream edge 3 NM southeast of Alligator Reef Light, so there is a real outside option without committing to a long bluewater run.

The reef should be fair to good for yellowtail in 45 to 75 feet. Muttons are fair on the deeper edge. Mangroves are fair around structure and lower light.

Alligator is also a good place to make decisions with your eyes. If the reef is alive, stay on it. If the outside shows color and bait, go take a look. If neither happens, change depth before you start telling stories.

tennessee reef

Tennessee is fishable and comfortable today. From Islamorada it is farther than the closer reef line, so I would not pass good water at Davis, Crocker, or Alligator without a reason.

Yellowtail and mangrove snapper are fair to good from 40 to 70 feet. Mutton snapper are fair on the deeper pieces during the falling tide. The afternoon low can slow it down, so plan your best effort before the water gets lazy.

For boats already leaning west, Tennessee is on the board.

Yellowtail snapper are the best bet today. The reef is calm, the morning high gives way to a long falling tide, and the wind is light enough to set up carefully. Keep the bait natural and do not overfeed them.

Mutton snapper are a fair shot on the deeper edge from Conch through Tennessee. Fresh bait matters. Placement matters. Patience matters when the current is right.

Mahi are fair because the Gulf Stream edge is close to Molasses and Alligator. That does not mean run blind until lunch. It means check the signs, then decide.

Blackfin tuna are fair early around current edges and bait outside. They are a bonus fish in this setup.

The flats side is heat limited. Bonefish, permit, and tarpon can still make you look good, but 89.2 F bay water before sunrise is not forgiving. Early, late, moving water. That is the deal.

Fish the reef first. Davis is the easy half-day call. Crocker and Alligator are the better snapper plays if the current looks right. Molasses gets the outside-water nod because the Gulf Stream edge is tucked close, but I would not leave a working yellowtail bite just to go stare at blue water.

NOAA Key West updated the coastal waters forecast at 10:22 AM EDT. No big change in the sea state. Hawk Channel is still southwest to west 5 to 10 knots with seas around 1 foot and nearshore waters smooth to a light chop.

The Straits got a little softer in the wording. The morning had south to southwest wind near 5 knots. The midday forecast keeps it near 5 knots, then lets it go variable this afternoon, with seas still around 1 foot and a west to northwest 1 foot wave at 5 seconds.

Florida Bay also eased from the morning read of southwest wind near 10 knots to southwest 5 to 10 knots for the afternoon. Bay waters stay smooth to a light chop. Shower and thunderstorm chances remain slight, so keep an eye west and south, but the working call has not changed much.

If you are already on the reef, stay disciplined with the current. The weather is giving us a comfortable platform. The fish still get a vote.

evening addendum

NOAA Key West put out the 4:18 PM EDT coastal waters forecast, and the day is ending about how it started. Soft. The Atlantic ridge is still sliding west across the Keys, leaving a weak flow tonight and light to variable breeze expected Friday into the first part of the weekend.

For the afternoon recap, Hawk Channel stayed in the easy-water category. The evening forecast has southwest to west wind 5 to 10 knots becoming south to southwest near 5 knots tonight, seas 1 foot or less, and nearshore waters going from smooth to a light chop back to smooth. The Straits are even lighter, variable wind near 5 knots with seas around 1 foot and a west to northwest 1 foot wave at 5 seconds.

Florida Bay also lays down tonight. Southwest to west wind 5 to 10 knots decreases to near 5 knots, with bay waters becoming smooth. That is comfortable boat handling, but it is still late July. The bay water was 89.2 F before sunrise, so tomorrow’s flats window still needs to be treated like a short one.

Friday looks good on paper. Hawk Channel is forecast south to southwest wind near 5 knots, seas 1 foot or less, and smooth nearshore water, with a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms. The Straits show east to southeast wind near 5 knots becoming east, seas around 1 foot, and mixed 1 foot waves from the east to southeast at 3 seconds and west to northwest at 4 seconds.

The play does not change much. Fish the reef first if the current behaves. Davis is still the easy family trip. Crocker and Alligator are the better snapper lanes if the chum line stretches right. Molasses keeps a little outside upside with the Gulf Stream edge listed 1 NM southeast of the light, but only go look if the ocean gives you a reason.

Tomorrow is a good day to be ready early, move when the water stalls, and keep one eye on the sky. Calm water is nice. It does not clean fish by itself.
