Captain's log, August 1, 2026, light breeze and one foot reef water

Saturday, August 1. NOAA Key West issued the coastal waters forecast at 4:37 AM EDT, and the Islamorada reef line gets another light-wind summer day.

The western side of the Atlantic ridge is sliding across the Keys. NOAA calls it weak, nebulous flow with light to gentle breezes today, then southeast breeze freshening later in the weekend and into early next week. Rain chances start low today, then creep up next week as deeper moisture spreads in ahead of a front near north Florida.

For Hawk Channel, NOAA has variable wind near 5 knots becoming east to southeast. Off the Upper Keys, south to southwest wind near 5 knots becomes southeast to south 5 to 10 knots. Seas are 1 foot or less, with nearshore waters smooth, becoming smooth to a light chop off the Upper Keys.

The Straits are still easy on paper. East wind 5 to 10 knots, seas around 1 foot, and an east 1 foot wave at 2 seconds. That opens the door for a clean reef trip, and if the reef gives you the right current, it should fish.

Vaca Key, Florida Bay reported 91.0 F water at 5:18 AM EDT. That is hot water before the day even starts. Bay and flats crews need moving water and discipline. Reef crews get the better card today.

hawk channel

Hawk Channel is the practical lane today. Light wind, 1 foot or less, and smooth nearshore water give you plenty of room to work from Key Largo down through Islamorada.

The catch is boat position. Light breeze lets the boat wander, and a wandering chum line is how good bait turns into a donation. Set up clean. If the line does not stretch, move.

Davis and Crocker are strong half-day calls. Conch and Alligator give you more room to hunt current and depth. Molasses has the closest Gulf Stream note on the Upper Keys side, with NOAA placing the edge 2 NM southeast of Molasses Reef Light as of July 31.

straits of florida

The Straits are fishable. NOAA has east wind 5 to 10 knots, seas around 1 foot, and wave detail east 1 foot at 2 seconds.

NDBC buoy 41122 reported a 0.1 meter sea at 5:30 AM EDT, which is about 0.3 feet. Water there was 30.2 C, about 86.4 F. That lines up with the forecast and gives the outside run a fair look.

NOAA lists the shoreward edge of the Gulf Stream 5 NM southeast of Alligator Reef Light and 2 NM southeast of Molasses Reef Light. Close enough to matter, but still make the fish show you something. Birds, bait, color change, flyers, a weed edge, or a current seam are worth a look. Empty pretty water is still empty.

florida bay

Florida Bay is smooth, with variable wind near 5 knots becoming south to southwest. Bay waters are smooth, and NOAA carries a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms.

The heat is the whole story back there. Vaca Key was already 91.0 F at 5:18 AM EDT. Bonefish, permit, and tarpon can still eat, but the window is tight. Fish early, fish moving water, and do not grind dead-hot flats just because the sky looks nice.

For the reef, the best shape should be around the push into the 11:23 AM high and the fall after it. If the current stretches down the reef, yellowtail should respond. If it quits near the evening low, reset instead of waiting on dead water.

molasses reef

Molasses gets the best outside-water note today. NOAA has the Gulf Stream edge 2 NM southeast of Molasses Reef Light, and the Straits forecast is small enough to peek outside if the signs stack up.

Yellowtail snapper should be fair to good in 45 to 75 feet if the current holds. Mutton snapper are fair on the deeper edge. Cero mackerel are fair around bait and active slicks.

Do not leave a working yellowtail bite just because the water outside looks clean. Clean water does not fillet itself.

conch reef

Conch is a good working reef today. Light wind gives you comfort, and the tide gives you a late morning high with enough water movement to make the chum matter.

Start with yellowtail in 45 to 75 feet. Keep a mutton bait down while the current is right. Mangrove snapper are fair around structure, especially if clouds or early light help.

If the boat lays wrong, fix it. In this kind of breeze, ten yards can change the whole stop.

davis reef

Davis is the easy half-day call. Short run, calm water, and plenty of usable bottom in the 40 to 60 foot range.

Yellowtail should be fair, with a shot at good if the chum line tightens. Mangrove snapper are fair. Cero mackerel are possible if bait stacks up behind the boat.

For families or newer anglers, Davis makes sense today. Keep it simple and make the first clean current count.

crocker reef

Crocker gets a good grade because it gives you options without a big move. Start in 50 to 80 feet and let the current decide whether you slide shallower or deeper.

Yellowtail are the main bet. Mutton snapper are fair deeper with fresh bait near bottom. Mangroves are fair on the rougher pieces.

If the slick wanders under the boat, do not sit there. Move until the chum line looks alive.

alligator reef

Alligator has a good shot today, especially with NOAA placing the Gulf Stream edge 5 NM southeast of the light. That can put cleaner water close enough to influence the outside edge.

Yellowtail are fair to good in the right current. Muttons are fair on the deeper side. Cero mackerel are fair if bait is present.

Watch the water color and the current angle. If the outside looks right and the reef is slow, a short look may be worth it.

tennessee reef

Tennessee should be comfortable in this forecast. Light wind, low sea state, and smooth to light chop nearshore are about as friendly as August gives you.

Yellowtail are fair. Mangroves are fair around structure. Mutton snapper are fair if you can keep a bait placed clean while the water moves.

The same rule applies here as everywhere else today. Find current first. The fish come after that.

species outlook

Yellowtail snapper are the best reef bet. Light seas make it easier to fish the right depth, but the bite still needs moving water and a clean chum line.

Mutton snapper are fair on deeper reef edges and broken bottom. Fresh bait matters more than fancy thinking.

Mangrove snapper are fair around structure, better early or under lower light. Cero mackerel are fair where bait is pushed into the slick.

Mahi mahi and blackfin tuna are possible outside, but I would not sell the whole day on it before seeing life. With the Gulf Stream close to Molasses and Alligator, a short look can make sense after the reef produces or if the edge is obvious.

Bonefish, permit, and tarpon are heat-limited on the bay side. Fish them early or around moving water. Once the water gets cooked, go do something smarter.

midday addendum

NOAA Key West updated the coastal waters forecast at 10:17 AM EDT, and the morning call mostly held. That is the good news. No big jump in wind, no ugly sea change.

Hawk Channel is still listed as variable wind near 5 knots becoming east to southeast this afternoon. Off the Upper Keys, NOAA keeps south to southwest wind near 5 knots becoming southeast to south 5 to 10 knots. Seas stay 1 foot or less. Nearshore waters stay smooth, becoming smooth to a light chop off the Upper Keys.

The Straits did not get worse either. NOAA still has east wind 5 to 10 knots, seas around 1 foot, and wave detail of east 1 foot at 2 seconds. That keeps the outside look open, but it does not make it automatic. Birds, bait, weed, flyers, color, or current have to earn the detour.

Florida Bay remains comfortable on the surface and hot underneath. Variable wind near 5 knots becomes south to southwest this afternoon, with bay waters smooth and only a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms. The morning Vaca Key water temperature was already 91.0 F, so I still would not grind dead flats in the heat.

The Gulf Stream edge note is unchanged from the morning report. NOAA lists it 5 NM southeast of Alligator Reef Light and 2 NM southeast of Molasses Reef Light as of July 31. Close enough to keep Molasses and Alligator interesting, but the reef is still the smarter first swing if the chum line lays out.

For the rest of today, the plan stays pretty simple. Fish the reef first. Davis and Crocker are clean half-day calls. Alligator and Molasses are worth the extra attention if the water shows life outside. If the current quits, move before the heat makes the decision for you.

NOAA Key West put out the afternoon coastal waters forecast at 4:16 PM EDT, and the day stayed about where the morning report had it. Light wind, small water, and the kind of August heat that makes you pay attention to current before anything else.

For tonight, Hawk Channel is forecast variable near 5 knots, becoming east to southeast and increasing to 5 to 10 knots late. Seas are around 1 foot, with nearshore waters smooth, becoming smooth to a light chop late. The Straits are variable 5 to 10 knots becoming southeast, with seas around 1 foot and an east 1 foot wave at 3 seconds. Florida Bay stays smooth, with variable wind near 5 knots becoming southeast.

The nearby buoy still backed up the small-water call this afternoon. NDBC buoy 41122 reported 0.3 meters at 2:30 PM EDT, which is about 1.0 foot, with a 4 second dominant period and 86.9 F water. Vaca Key, Florida Bay reported west wind around 4 knots with gusts around 6 knots at 2:18 PM EDT, and the water there was 92.8 F. That is cooked bay water. Fish can still bite in it, but they will not give you much rope.

The afternoon recap is simple. The reef remained the better bet than baking on the flats. Davis and Crocker made sense for a short, clean run. Conch, Alligator, and Molasses were the places to watch if the current lined up and the outside color looked worth a peek. With NOAA still carrying only a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms tonight, the weather did not force the issue. The heat did.

Sunday looks fishable again. NOAA has southeast to south wind 5 to 10 knots in Florida Bay, southeast to south near 10 knots in Hawk Channel, and southeast wind 5 to 10 knots in the Straits. Hawk Channel seas stay around 1 foot. The Straits build only to 1 to 2 feet, with east to southeast 1 foot at 3 seconds. Rain stays at a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms.

That keeps the reef plan alive for Sunday morning. Start with yellowtail where the chum line stretches and keep a mutton bait down if the current has enough push. If the reef is lazy, do not sit there trying to argue with it. Slide, reset, or take a short outside look only if birds, bait, weed, flyers, color, or current give you a reason.
