Captain's log, September 8, 2026, light breeze, slick reef water, hot bay side

Tuesday, September 8. NOAA Key West issued the coastal waters forecast at 4:19 AM EDT, and Islamorada gets a light-water day on paper.

The Keys are sitting under a broad, weak pressure pattern. That means light and sometimes variable breeze through early Wednesday. By Wednesday the Atlantic ridge starts building back in, and the wind should become more easterly with a little more push.

For today, Hawk Channel from Ocean Reef through Craig Key and west toward Seven Mile has variable winds near 5 knots. Seas are 1 foot or less. Nearshore waters are smooth, with a chance of showers and a slight chance of thunderstorms.

The Straits are small too. NOAA has southeast to south winds near 5 knots, becoming east around 5 knots late. Seas are 1 foot or less, with a chance of showers and a slight chance of thunderstorms.

Small water is good. September still has teeth. A thunderstorm can turn a flat ocean into a bad idea real quick, so keep the radar honest and do not get lazy just because the ride out is easy.

Station 41122 southeast of Key Largo showed 0.7 ft seas, a 2.6 second average period, and 87.4 F water at 5:30 AM EDT. Long Key was showing southwest wind near 4 knots with gusts near 6 knots at 5:40 AM EDT. Sombrero Key was showing west-southwest wind near 5 knots with gusts near 7 knots at 5:40 AM EDT.

That matches the forecast well enough. Light air, small water, hot water. The boat ride is the easy part. The fishing depends on clean current and how much cloud cover or rain sits on the reef line.

hawk channel

Hawk Channel gets a good comfort grade today. Variable wind near 5 knots and seas 1 foot or less put Molasses, Conch, Davis, Crocker, Alligator, and Tennessee reefs on the board.

The problem with a breeze this light is not the ride. It is boat behavior. If the current is soft, the anchor line can hang wrong, the chum can sit under the stern, and the bite can look dead when the setup is really the issue.

Fish the moving water. If the slick stretches and the bait holds behind the boat, stay with it. If everything hangs straight down, reset before the heat gets its hands on the day.

straits of florida

The Straits are fishable on the numbers. Southeast to south near 5 knots, becoming east around 5 knots late, with seas 1 foot or less is about as friendly as September offshore water gets.

NOAA’s Gulf Stream note, dated September 2, puts the shoreward edge 10 NM southeast of Alligator Reef Light and 6 NM east-southeast of Molasses Reef Light. That is close enough to make an outside check reasonable from the Upper Keys.

Reasonable is not the same as guaranteed. I would want birds, weed, bait, flyers, a hard color edge, or a current line before spending the morning offshore. Empty water still counts as empty water, even when it is calm.

florida bay

Florida Bay is smooth today with variable winds near 5 knots. Vaca Key, Florida Bay reported 89.4 F water at 5:54 AM EDT.

That is hot before breakfast. Bonefish, permit, and tarpon can still eat, but the bay side needs early moving water and quick handling. Midday dead water in this heat is a waste of good patience.

For the reef, the better working window is the water falling off the morning high toward the 1:30 to 1:45 PM low, then the first part of the evening rise if the weather stays clean. The tide range is usable. The current just has to point the slick the right way.

molasses reef

Molasses gets a good call for comfort. Station 41122 is showing less than a foot of sea and 87.4 F water, and NOAA has the Gulf Stream edge 6 NM east-southeast of Molasses Reef Light.

Yellowtail should be the first play in 45 to 75 feet. Mangroves are fair around structure. Muttons are fair on the deeper side if you have the right bait and enough current to keep it honest.

Molasses also has the best outside argument today. Still, I would make the ocean prove itself before giving it the morning.

conch reef

Conch should be comfortable. Light wind and smooth nearshore water make it easy to fish, but easy water can make crews too patient in the wrong spot.

Work 50 to 80 feet for yellowtail. Keep the chum steady and watch the line. If the current runs clean, stay put. If it wanders, move.

davis reef

Davis is the smart half day call. Short run, smooth water, and plenty of good bottom if the crew wants action without turning the day into a search mission.

Fish 40 to 60 feet for yellowtail and mangroves. Put one deeper bait down if the current gives you room. Do not let a bonus mutton rod slow down a working snapper bite.

crocker reef

Crocker has a good snapper look, especially if the current sets up on the falling tide. With barely any breeze, the anchor set should be easy, but the boat may not lay right unless the water is moving.

Fish 55 to 80 feet. Yellowtail should be good where the slick stretches. Muttons are fair on the edge. Cero mackerel are fair if bait gathers behind the boat.

alligator reef

Alligator is one of the better calls. The reef is easy to reach in this sea state, and NOAA’s Gulf Stream note has the shoreward edge 10 NM southeast of the light.

Yellowtail should be good in 45 to 75 feet. Mangroves are fair tight to structure. Muttons are fair deeper. Offshore is a short look only if the surface shows life.

tennessee reef

Tennessee is fishable, but I would not drive past biting water to get there. On a light wind day, the better move is usually to stop where the current is doing the job.

Fish 40 to 70 feet for yellowtail and mangroves. The deeper edge gets a fair mutton shot. If the bite is slow and the slick is lazy, do not sit there admiring the calm.

Yellowtail get the best grade. The reef is calm enough to fish properly, and the tide gives you a real current window if it lines up.

Mangroves are fair around structure. Muttons are a deeper bonus. Cero mackerel are fair if bait shows up and stays in the chum.

Mahi and blackfin are fair because the Straits are small and the Stream edge is close enough to check from Molasses or Alligator. That does not make it a blind-run day. Let the ocean show signs before you leave fishable reef water.

The bay side is heat limited. Vaca Key at 89.4 F before sunrise says fish early, handle fish clean, and do not grind dead water just because the wind is pretty.

captain’s call

Fish the reef first. Davis is the practical half day move. Crocker and Alligator get the best snapper look if the current behaves. Conch is steady. Molasses gets the strongest outside-water argument, but only if the ocean shows birds, weed, bait, or a real edge.

Tennessee is fine if you are already pointed west. I would not make it the first stop from Islamorada unless the closer reefs look sleepy.

Today is good water for reef fishing, not automatic fishing. Light breeze, slick seas, hot water, and September showers in the mix. Go early, use the tide, and keep one eye on the sky.

midday addendum, 10:21 AM NOAA update

NOAA Key West updated the coastal waters forecast at 10:21 AM EDT. The big picture did not change much for the Islamorada run. We still have a weak pressure pattern, light and sometimes variable breeze through early Wednesday, and scattered wet weather around the Keys.

Hawk Channel held steady from the morning call. NOAA still has variable winds near 5 knots this afternoon, seas 1 foot or less, and smooth nearshore water with a chance of showers and a slight chance of thunderstorms.

The Straits eased a touch from the morning wording. The early forecast had southeast to south winds near 5 knots, becoming east around 5 knots late. The midday forecast now has variable winds near 5 knots this afternoon with seas 1 foot or less. Tonight it turns east at 5 to 10 knots with seas around 1 foot.

Florida Bay stayed about the same too. Variable winds near 5 knots and smooth bay water this afternoon, then east winds 5 to 10 knots tonight with bay waters becoming smooth to a light chop.

The change to watch is Wednesday night and Thursday. The ridge starts to build in, and NOAA brings easterly wind up to 10 to 15 knots Wednesday night. Straits seas build to 2 to 3 feet. That is not nasty, but it is a different ride than this slick Tuesday water.

For the rest of today, the call stays reef first. Fish the moving water, keep the radar up, and do not let the flat ocean talk you into ignoring thunderheads.
