Most first-timers and families book the 4-hour Half Day out of Robbie's Marina, which stays in calm, protected reef water and gets you back to the dock by lunch.
Never been on a fishing charter?
Roughly a third of the people we take out have never fished offshore before, and honestly some have never held a rod. We built the whole operation around that. You show up, we hand you a rigged rod at the strike, and we coach you through the fight. That is the entire skill required from you.
What a first charter actually looks like
You meet us at Robbie's Marina in Islamorada around 15 minutes before your trip. We load the boat, run out to the reef in about 20 minutes, and start fishing. Most first-timers are hooked up within the first half hour, and the mate is right there showing you how to reel it in.
We fish, you fish. Nobody expects you to be an expert. If we hook a fish and hand you the rod, we walk you through every step. When the fight is over we take the photo, ice the fish, and get back to it.
At the end of the trip we clean everything at the dock and package your fillets. Robbie's has a restaurant that will cook your catch fresh the same afternoon.

Which charter is best for a first trip?
Half Day (4 hours): most first-timers
$1,200 plus $200 fuel, up to 6 anglers. Stays in protected reef and patch waters. Smooth ride, tons of variety (snapper, grouper, mackerel, jacks), and you are back at the dock by lunch. If it is your first time on a boat or you have a mixed group, this is the trip.
Split Charter (6 hours): solo or couples
$475 per person plus $50 seat fuel. Share the boat with one or two other small parties. Half the cost of a private, full offshore experience. Perfect if you are a solo angler or a couple who wants deep water without paying for the whole boat.

Is DirtyBoat Charters good for kids or first-time anglers?
Yes. About a third of our customers have never held a rod before boarding, and the captain and mate handle all the rigging, bait, and coaching. We take kids as young as 4 or 5 on Half Day trips when parents come along, kids under 12 wear a Coast Guard-approved life jacket on deck (we provide them), and kids under 12 do not count toward the 6-angler limit. The 42-foot Liberty has an air-conditioned cabin and a marine head for breaks out of the sun.
What trip should a beginner or family book?
The 4-hour Half Day out of Robbie's Marina. It stays in protected reef and patch waters, catches a lot of variety (snapper, grouper, mackerel, jacks), and gets you back to the dock by lunch. Families with younger kids should book it as a private charter rather than a split so the day runs on your schedule. Solo anglers and couples can take the 6-hour Split Charter instead, and groups with teens or experienced anglers can step up to the 3/4 Day for mahi and sailfish offshore.
I have never fished offshore. Is a DirtyBoat charter right for me?
Yes. About a third of our customers have never held a rod before boarding, and we build the trip around that. We rig everything, put the rod in your hand at the strike, and coach you through the fight. You do not need to know knots, bait, or gear.
What is the best first charter to book in Islamorada?
A 4-hour Half Day out of Robbie's Marina is the standard first trip. It stays close to the reef and patches, catches a lot of variety, and gets you back to the dock in time for lunch. If your group is more adventurous and you want a shot at bigger fish, the 6-hour 3/4 Day is our most popular option.
What do I actually need to bring?
Sunscreen (not the aerosol kind, it kills the deck), polarized sunglasses, a hat, closed-toe or non-slip shoes, snacks and drinks if you want them, and cash for the mate (standard tip is 20 percent of the trip price). Rods, reels, bait, tackle, ice, water, and licenses are all included.
Will I get seasick?
Most first-timers do not. The reef and inshore waters we fish on a Half Day are protected and calm. If you are nervous about it, take Bonine or Dramamine the night before and the morning of the trip. Ginger candy works too. Once you are into fish, you rarely think about it.
Do I keep the fish I catch?
Any legal-sized keeper is yours. Snapper, grouper, mahi, and mackerel are the everyday eating fish we clean at the dock. We vacuum bag your fillets if you want to travel with them. Regulated species (goliath grouper, sailfish, marlin) are released after a quick photo.
How many people can go on one trip?
The 42-foot Liberty comfortably fits up to 6 anglers for a private charter. Larger groups (bachelor parties, corporate outings) we accommodate by booking multiple boats in the affiliate fleet on the same day. Kids under 12 do not count toward the 6-angler limit.
What happens if the weather is bad?
We watch the forecast for 72 hours before every trip. If it is unsafe to run, we call you and reschedule. If it is fishable but rougher than you expected, we can adjust the plan (stay inshore, run to protected water, shorten the trip). We never take you out into conditions we would not fish in ourselves.
How early do I need to book?
Peak season (December through May) books out 2 to 4 weeks in advance for weekends. Summer weekdays we can usually take you within a few days. If you are already in Islamorada and want to fish tomorrow, call directly at (305) 209-5594 rather than trying online.
